Your comprehensive guide to the self-custody crypto wallet that puts you in control of your crypto, keys, and data. Explore DeFi, collect NFTs, and browse the decentralized web with confidence.
The Coinbase Wallet Extension is a self-custody crypto wallet that exists as a browser add-on for Chrome, Brave, and other Chromium-based browsers. Unlike the main Coinbase exchange app where the company holds your funds, the Wallet Extension gives you complete control over your private keys and digital assets.
It acts as a bridge between your web browser and the Ethereum blockchain (and many others), allowing you to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) directly without needing a centralized intermediary.
Packed with powerful features designed for both beginners and crypto veterans.
Your private keys are stored directly on your device, encrypted with a password only you know. Biometric security adds an extra layer of protection.
Connect to thousands of decentralized finance apps to earn yield, swap tokens, and lend/borrow assets without a middleman.
View your NFT collection in a beautiful gallery view. Buy and sell directly on marketplaces like OpenSea and Rarible.
Seamlessly switch between Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, and more without manual configuration.
True ownership means you control your assets. Export your recovery phrase anytime and take your wallet anywhere.
Easily link your extension with the Coinbase Wallet mobile app to manage your portfolio on the go.
Setting up the Coinbase Wallet Extension is straightforward. Follow these steps to get up and running in minutes.
Available for Chrome, Brave, Edge, and other Chromium browsers.
Visit the Chrome Web Store and search for 'Coinbase Wallet'. Click 'Add to Chrome' to install the extension to your browser.
Click the extension icon. You can either 'Create a new wallet' if you're new, or 'I already have a wallet' to import an existing recovery phrase.
If creating a new wallet, you will be shown a 12-word recovery phrase. Write this down on paper and store it securely offline. Never share this with anyone.
Set a strong password to unlock the extension on your daily device. This adds a layer of security for local access.
For easy access, click the puzzle piece icon in your browser toolbar and pin the Coinbase Wallet icon so it's always visible.
With self-custody comes great responsibility. You are the only one who can access your funds. Coinbase cannot recover your wallet if you lose your recovery phrase.
Your 12-word recovery phrase grants full access to your funds. No support agent will ever ask for it.
For large amounts, connect a Ledger hardware wallet to your Coinbase Wallet Extension for cold storage security.
Phishing sites look identical to real ones. Always bookmark your favorite dApps and check the URL carefully.
Regularly disconnect your wallet from sites you are no longer using via the settings menu.
